In the culture field of all flowers blooming,Chinese culture and Western culturehave both competition and fusion,especially“Jen” in Confucianism and “Agape” inChristianity.“Love” constitutes the core idea of Confucianism and Christianity and isthe most precious treasure of mankind.However,their different theoretical basis anddifferent view of human nature caused the differences of the two “love”.Based on theformation and development of “Jen” in Confucianism and “Agape” in Christianity,thearticle analyzes the similarities and differences by comparing the characteristic oftheir thoughts,basic connotation and realistic significance.This paper is divided intofour chapters.The introduction describes the reason and significance of writing.Thefirst chapter studies the formation and development of “Jen” in Confucianism.Itexplains the thoughts of “Jen” in Confucianism from the beginning to theunderstanding by Confucius.Mencius and Xunzi discussed the theory of humannature.The Neo Confucianism developed and innovated “Jen”.The second chapterstudies the formation and development of “Agape” in Christianity.It explains thethought of “Agape” in Christianity starting from the generation.Augustin,as churchfathers,interpreted the “Agape”thought.Aquinas and Deng Scotus had differencesabout the understanding of “Agape”.Ruth and Calvin reformed the “Agape” thoughtin sixteen century.The third chapter and the fourth chapter are the focus of thispaper.By comparing their characteristics,it explains the differences of “Jen” and“Agape” in basic principles,essentialattribute,ultimate purpose and realisticpractice;and explains the similarities and differences between the two kinds ofthought in its basic connotation and realistic significance to think again thecomparative study of “Jen” in Confucianism and “Agape” in Christianity.There arelimitations in the article because of the limited aspects of the comparative culture andhistory knowledge,so I hope to have the opportunity to compare more effectively anddeeply the culture of China and West,especially providing reference for the study of“Jen” in Confucianism and “Agape” in Christianity.
