Dmitry Aleksandrovich Prigov, one of the founders and leading figures of Moscow Conceptualism,is often referred to as the “unofficial sun of Russian poetry”.With a professional background in the arts,Prigov’s poetry reflects his unique blending of literature and art.Prigov stands out not only as a significant contributor to Russian postmodernist literature, with extensive work in poetry, fiction, and theatre, but also as an active and versatile artist. He draws from a range of contemporary art forms, including plastic art and performance, with text as his primary mode of expression.Prigov’s poetry and art exist in a complementary relationship, intimately interconnected and fused. This thesis aims to delve deeply into the connection between Prigov’s poetry and art, elucidating the ideas conveyed by his representative poems and exploring the underlying reasons that shape the form and content of his works. The thesis comprises six parts. The introduction briefly presents the topic’s background and significance, reviews Prigov’s domestic and foreign research results, and outlines the thesis’ research ideas and methods.Chapter 1 of the main text starts from the origin of the idea of conceptual art, examines the background and formation of Moscow conceptualism, identifies the aesthetic characteristics that differentiate it from European and American conceptual art.On this basis, the chapter analyzes the “DAP project” as a strategy of conceptual art and explains Prigov’s core creative methods and artistic philosophy.Chapter 2 of the main text focuses on the series of Prigov’s graphic poems,Stikhogrammy, which integrate poetry and painting. This chapter uses visual images as a starting point and analyzes the specific content of Stikhogrammy based on different text types, exploring the author’s intentions and the meanings conveyed. The chapter concludes by looking back at the development path of graphic poetry and the revelations of contemporary art, thus revealing the inner reasons for the expressive techniques and artistic concepts adopted by Prigov.Chapter 3 examines Prigov’s poetic performance, which blends poetry and performance. It analyzes the content and connotation of the core texts in Prigov’s poetic performance, drawing on stylistic characteristics, and explores the influence of Russian avant-garde literature and western modern art trends in the form and content of Prigov’s poetic performance.Chapter 4 of the main text focuses on the image of monsters in Prigov’s poetry and paintings. This chapter takes Prigov’s series of paintings entitled Bestiaries as a reference, classifies his poems related to “monsters”,and explains the ideas conveyed by his certain poems. The chapter concludes with an analysis of the theme of “new anthropology”that Prigov expressed through his use of monster images within the context of western religious mythology and the cultural significance of the devil theme in Russian literature and art.Prigov’s literary and artistic creations are inseparable as he is an amphibious “cultural worker” in both fields. Therefore, the value and innovation of this thesis resides in its focus on Prigov’s poetry and analysis from an artistic perspective, which facilitates a deep exploration of the characteristics and essence of his literature.
