Chen Zhifo is not only one of the founders and pioneers of modern arts and crafts education in China, but also the first modern person to study Arts and Crafts abroad. As the first person to go to Japan to study design,Chen Zhifo devoted the first half of his life to innovating traditional arts and crafts education. He pushed forward the modernization of traditional crafts and stepped out on an innovative path of combining Chinese and Western Art and developing the present by the ancient. His reflections on the core concepts of art, arts and crafts, aesthetic education and design,as well as the related articles and theses he wrote and published, have laid the academic and intellectual foundations of Chinese arts and crafts. The numerous examples of creative design that he has personally created not only enrich the educational practices, but also constitute an interaction and feedback between the society and the industry.Much of his innovation in the field of painting in the second part of his life came from his literacy in arts and crafts, especially design.Generally speaking,he has bridged the relationship between traditional arts and crafts and pure painting. It provides a successful model for the innovation of traditional painting with cross-border significance, and also provides new ideas for the design principles and design concepts of contemporary design art.Eventually,it promotes the development of arts and crafts in the new era.In the research of Chen Zhifo’s thoughts on arts and crafts education, most of the previous research focuses on his educational practice rather than on his design practice. This thesis closely integrates Chen Zhifo’s arts and crafts education with his design practice.Exploring his handling of these two relationships,it further examines the complex relationship between arts and crafts education and social industry in China at that time. Therefore, this thesis attempts to provide an insight into the development of modern crafts in China as a whole, although it is based on a case study. The thesis is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter examines the social conditions and cultural trends of the era described by Chen Zhifo. On this basis,it analyses the origin and development of Chen Zhifo’s thoughts on arts and crafts education. The second chapter focuses on Chen Zhifo’s thoughts on aesthetic education.Chen Zhifo’s ideology of aesthetic education profoundly influenced his understanding of the nature of arts and crafts. Thus, before analyzing Chen Zhifo’s thoughts on arts and crafts education,it is necessary to study the sources and characteristics of his thoughts on aesthetic education.Chapters three and four explore Chen Zhifo’s interpretation of arts and crafts and design. He advocates for the advancement of China’s arts and crafts focusing on future-oriented and society-serving development.Chapters 5 and 6 are based on the analyses of Chen Zhifo’s design teaching, creative design activities and the founding of the Shang Mei Design Pavilion, specifically elaborating on the essence of “beauty and utility” in Chen Zhifo’s thoughts on arts and crafts. In addition, based on the traditional culture,Chen Zhifo upholds the design principles and concepts of integrating tradition and modernity,China and the West. The last chapter analyses the contemporary significance of Chen Zhifo’s thoughts on arts and crafts education.Contemporary design education can only adhere to the open and inclusive academic thinking, pay close attention to the basic skills training, and take root in the national traditional design in order to come out of the Chinese characteristics of the road of development of design in the big tide of this ages of industrialization, information and intelligence.
