In the process of educational modernization,we are constantly exposed to the influence of cultural traditions, and we usually do not feel its promoting effect, but feel its hindering effect deeply, which leads to the rejection of traditions, and thus leads to the long-term contradiction between "traditions" and "modernization" in education. For this reason,it is necessary to clarify the relationship between cultural traditions and educational modernization. However, although the relationship between "education and society" is a fundamental issue in education, compared with the studies on the relationship between "education and politics" and "education and economy," the study on the relationship between "education and culture" in the academic field is not as important."However, the relationship between education and culture has not been explored enough. In particular,in the practice of promoting educational modernization in China, the doubts about the role of cultural traditions in educational modernization have led to many theoretical and practical problems. Therefore,it is necessary to explore the mechanism of the role of cultural traditions on educational modernization. The first prerequisite for exploring the mechanism is to clarify the concepts of "cultural tradition" and "educational modernization".Based on the understanding that "culture is a way of life","cultural tradition" refers to the system of spiritual concepts that has been passed down from the past to the present and influences people’s way of life, the core of which is values. It is not static and frozen, but changes with the changes of production methods, including the process of inheritance, abandonment and modern transformation of cultural traditions.Based on the understanding that "modernization is technology",education,as a part of social organism, understands "educational modernization" as the development process of education constantly adapting to social modernization, which in essence is the extensive use of technology in education.Educational modernization has many characteristics, among which "combining education with productive labor" is the most basic characteristic of educational modernization and the way to achieve it.Only when education is combined with advanced production work can the advanced science and technology in production be introduced into education and the modernization of education be realized. It can be seen that the modernization of education is determined by the modern mode of production.Historical materialism is the fundamental methodology for exploring the mechanism of the role of cultural traditions on the modernization of education. As a social consciousness, cultural traditions are conditioned by social existence, especially by the material mode of production. The modernization of education is also determined by the mode of production. Thus, cultural traditions and educational modernization are not cause-and-effect,but "one cause and two effects" under the common root of the mode of production, and they are related. Some people think that cultural traditions hinder the development of educational modernization, but if we ignore the fact that backward cultural traditions are conditioned by backward production methods,it becomes "cultural determinism",which is a historical idealism that "social consciousness determines social existence".Thus, the role of cultural traditions in the modernization of education is essentially the role of the underlying mode of production in the modernization of education. To explore the mechanism of the role of cultural traditions in the modernization of education,we should start from analyzing the elements of cultural traditions.Cultural traditions are historical and ethnic in nature, conditioned by the role of social existence.Due to the constraints of the social mode of production, there will always be some basic and essential spiritual concepts that can be adapted to the mode of production at a certain stage of the human historical development period, forming the scale behind the basic way of life conducive to human survival and development, which is the historical cultural tradition. However, people of different regions and races,in the process of constantly transforming and using the natural conditions in which they live, have formed their own unique methods of acquiring and using resources, and on this basis have formed different production status and social relations, which in turn have formed their unique way of life and the system of spiritual concepts behind them,i.e.ethnic cultural traditions.Historical cultural traditions and ethnic cultural traditions have different effects on educational modernization. In order to investigate the different roles of cultural traditions on educational modernization, the Sandui tribe in Qiannan was selected as the main field study object.Historic cultural traditions are close to material production and are prone to change as material production changes. If the historical cultural traditions of a country or ethnic group can promote the development of modern production methods,it will promote the level of educational modernization, and if it hinders the development of modern production methods,it will hinder the development of educational modernization.Second, ethnic cultural traditions influence the shape of educational modernization.Ethnic cultural traditions affect the form of educational modernization mainly by influencing the educational needs of cultural subjects, acting on the modernization form at the level of educational concepts, systems, knowledge and artifacts. Moreover, the role of ethnic cultural traditions on the form of educational modernization is regular, which is reflected in the following: firstly,in the static structure, the closer the internal components of ethnic cultural traditions are to material production, the smaller the role on the form of educational modernization, and the farther they are from material production, the stronger the role.Secondly,in the process of dynamic development,as the level of educational modernization increases, the stronger the role of ethnicity’s cultural traditions on the form of educational modernization will be.Theoretically, the mechanism of the role of cultural traditions in the modernization of education is ultimately aimed at better guiding the practice of educational modernization in China, and the corresponding strategies are proposed for this purpose:firstly, the limited role of the mode of production in the role of cultural traditions should be followed, and the mode of production should be transformed first in order to realize the transformation of cultural traditions and their negative effects on education, and at the same time, the cultural traditions adapted to the modern mode of production should be inherited and disseminated, and the modern transformation of cultural traditions in education should also be adapted to the modern mode of production. The second is to face the leading role of modern science and technology in the role of cultural traditions,to conform to the change of cultural traditions brought about by modern science and technology,to inherit the ethnic science and technology of cultural traditions, and to pay attention to the ethnicization of modern science and technology in education;the third is to pay attention to the role of cultural traditions in the modernization of the personality of education,to realize the ethnic transformation of historical cultural traditions.
