With the progress of a new round of global scientific,technological and industrial revolution,connecting traditional industry with modern technology through the deep integration of the new generation information technology and manufacturing industry,promoting the development of manufacturing industry to digitization,networking and intelligence,and promoting the application of the achievements of the new industrial revolution in the industrial field has become an important way to improve the intelligent level of manufacturing industry and to create new advantages of digital economy of China.Nowadays,as the direction of information infrastructure construction,industrial Internet of things(IIOT)is considered to be the key to improve high-quality development of China and an important driving force to promote the innovation,development,transformation and upgrading of Chinese enterprises.What is the "soul"of industrial Internet of things(IIOT)?What role does the IIOT plays in the innovation and development of enterprises?How do enterprises use the IIOT for resource acquisition and value creation?These problems need to be studied and thought urgently under the background of the current digital development.Aiming at the application of industrial Internet of things,this study has carried out a series of theoretical discussions and empirical tests on the relationship between IIOT and enterprise innovation from multiple perspectives,as well as the impact mechanism of action.Firstly,taking Chinese manufacturing listed enterprises as the research object,and discussing the effect of the application of IIOT on enterprise innovation under the digital background.This study combines traditional enterprise innovation with digital innovation,analyzes enterprise innovation from two levels:innovation behavior and innovation performance,including four indicators:R&D capability,digital innovation capability,innovation output and innovation efficiency.This paper makes an empirical study on the relationship between the application of IIOT and enterprise innovation activities under the digital background based on the panel data of A-share listed companies of manufacturing industry in China from 2013 to 2019 and propensity score matching and difference in difference(PSM-DID)method.And testing the heterogeneity impact of the application of IIOT from the two aspects of property rights nature and institutional environment.The results show that:The application of IIOT can significantly promote the four aspects of enterprise innovation with DID method and PSM-DID method.At the same time,compared with state-owned firms,non-stateowned firms show a higher level of innovation after applying IIOT;Compared with firms in areas with weak institutional environment,firms in areas with perfect institutional environment show a higher level of innovation after applying IIOT.Secondly,from the perspective of platform theory,this paper investigates the impact and mechanism of different application forms of IIOT platforms on enterprise innovation.Based on the public data onto A-share listed companies of manufacturing industry in China from 2018 to 2020,the application forms of IIOT platform are divided into two types:self-owned platform and participation in third-party platform,and the impact of the two forms of IIOT platform application on different aspects of enterprise innovation is discussed;Supported by the value co-creation theory and introducing the value proposition as the intermediary variable,this paper discusses the mechanism of the impact of IIOT platform on enterprise innovation.The results show that:Compared with the adoption of third-party IIOT platform,self-owned platform is more helpful to promote enterprise innovation.And the value proposition plays a partial intermediary role in the relationship between the ownership of IIOT platform and enterprise innovation.Compared with the third-party platform,self-owned platform firms can have more advantages to change their value proposition,and promote their innovation by attracting users to participate in value creation.Thirdly,based on the perspective of social network theory,this paper constructs the relationship network among the participating members of the construction and application of IIOT platform including firms themselves,and investigates the influence and mechanism of firms’ position in the network on enterprise innovation.The network location is divided into two levels:network centrality and structural hole.Based on the public data onto A-share listed companies of manufacturing industry in China from 2018 to 2020,we discussed the relationship of network location and enterprise innovation with all aspects.And then discussed the intermediary role of value propositions based on the theory of value co-creation.The results show that:The position,network centrality and structural hole of firms in network have promoted all aspects of enterprise innovation.The closer firm is to the central position of the network/the richer the structural holes of the firm are in the network,the more it will promote the R&D capability,digital innovation capability and other innovative capability of the enterprise,and the more it will promote the innovation output and innovation efficiency;Value proposition also plays an intermediary role in the relationship between network location and enterprise innovation.This study introduces the concept of digital innovation and digital innovation capability to discuss enterprise innovation in the digital background,and constructs the theoretical framework of the mechanism of the application of IIOT affecting enterprise innovation from different theoretical perspectives,and then tests the relationship between IIOT and enterprise innovation by using quantitative analysis and empirical methods.Possible contributions include:Hierarchical discussion on enterprise innovation under the digital background enriching and expanding the relevant research framework with introducing the concept of digital innovation;From multiple theoretical perspectives,this paper constructs the theoretical framework of the mechanism that the application of IIOT affects enterprise innovation,which not only makes up for the shortcomings of relevant research,but also enriches the theoretical basis and application scope of platform theory and social network theory;Based on the value co-creation theory,introducing the core element value proposition to analyze the intermediary role in the impact of IIOT platform ownership on enterprise innovation,which not only expands the relevant research on value proposition,but also enriches the research on the intermediary mechanism of IIOT platform on Enterprise Innovation.At the same time,it also expands the theoretical space of resource dependence theory from the symbiotic level of value co-creation and resource dependence;Finally,this paper uses the method of empirical analysis to test the impact of the application of IIOT on enterprise innovation for the first time,and expands the scope and research situation of the research object about IIOT.This study has many important management implications for enterprises to make full use of the IIOT platform,play a leading role,promote the application process of the IIOT,tap and give full play to the potential energy efficiency of the IIOT,and to realize the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry.At the same time,it is also important to the government to ensure,supervise and promote the construction and healthy development of the IIOT.And provide important decision-making reference from guiding enterprises in the industry to develop application scenarios.
