| China’s economy has shifted into a high-quality development stage,which requires the leading role of technological innovation at a higher level and on a larger scale.To enterprises,innovation is the key factor for their survival and development.As the main force of innovation and entrepreneurship,technology-based new ventures have become an important force in the implementation of innovation-driven development strategy.However,Chinese technologybased new ventures are facing a high uncertainty environment--influenced by the escalation of international trade disputes,the aggravating global environment pollution and the outbreak of COVID-19 externally as well as the economic slowdown and the intensifying competition internally,continuous innovation with minor improvements in product can no longer meet survival and development requirements of technology-based new ventures,enterprises are in urgent need of discontinuous innovation that can produce totally new products,improve product highly or open up new markets.Furthermore,the inherent disadvantages of new ventures and the lack of innovation knowledge also restrict the improvement of their innovation level and innovation ability,as well as limit the realization of discontinuous innovation.Under this circumstance,it is vital for technology-based new ventures to obtain innovation knowledge from outside,improve innovation ability and innovation level so as to realize discontinuous innovation.However,most of extant researches pay attention to the direct influence of external knowledge obtained by boundary-spanning search on innovation,while the few researches focus on indirect process that lacks in-depth analysis of the internal mechanism and path of the transformation from boundary-spanning search to discontinuous innovation and lacks the degree of boundary-spanning search promote discontinuous innovation directly and indirectly.Therefore,based on knowledge-based theory,theoretical analysis and empirical research on the influence of boundary-spanning search of technology-based new ventures on discontinuous innovation are conducted through utilizing knowledge creation,organizational search and dynamic capability theory.Also,methods such as literature research,exploratory multi-case study and regression analysis are used.The impact mechanism,the critical path and influence degree of boundary-spanning search on discontinuous innovation are revealed.It not only deepens and enriches the theoretical research related to innovation and entrepreneurship,but also provides effective guidance for technology-based new ventures to optimize management practice and to realise discontinuous innovation.The major contents and conclusion of the thesis are shown below:(1)Exploring the internal mechanism of dynamic influence of boundary-spanning search on discontinuous innovation of technology-based new ventures.Using exploratory multi-case study,this paper dynamically explores "why" and "how" boundary-spanning search influence discontinuous innovation from the perspective of process.Firstly,the evolution of key variables involved in the process of boundary-spanning search-to-discontinuous innovation is analyzed.Secondly,analysis of process path,the direct path " boundary-spanning search--discontinuous innovation”,the knowledge path of " boundary-spanning search--knowledge integration--discontinuous innovation”,the capability path of "boundary-spanning search--ambidextrous capabilities--discontinuous innovation",the cross path of "knowledge integration--ambidextrous capabilities" are concluded respectively through exploratory multi-case clustering analysis,and six research propositions are put forward.Lastly,based on the perspective of knowledge-based theory,a comprehensive model of the internal mechanism of boundary-spanning search affecting discontinuous innovation is proposed,as well as the competitive interpretation of the comprehensive model,so as to dynamically reveal the internal process and mechanism.(2)Constructing and empirically testing the conceptual model of boundary-spanning search affect discontinuous innovation directly and through knowledge integration and ambidextrous capabilities indirectly.An integrated conceptual model concerning boundaryspanning search,knowledge integration,ambidextrous capabilities and discontinuous innovation is constructed,and a large sample empirical test is conducted to quantify the path of boundary-spanning search affecting discontinuous innovation by using the methods of reliability and validity analysis and multiple regression analysis.The results show that there are differences in the paths of the dimensions of boundary-spanning search on discontinuous innovation.To be specific,breadth search of technical knowledge,depth search of technical knowledge and depth search of market knowledge have direct impact on discontinuous innovation in different degrees,those three dimensions of boundary-spanning search play an indirectly effect on discontinuous innovation through the mediating effect of knowledge integration and ambidextrous capabilities,but the above relationship does not exist between breadth search of market knowledge and discontinuous innovation.Knowledge integration has a significant positive impact on ambidextrous capabilities.(3)Constructing and empirically testing the conceptual model of boundary-spanning search on discontinuous innovation in the influence of situational factors.By deeply investigating whether there are differences in the impact mechanism of boundary-spanning search on discontinuous innovation under different situational factors,two situational moderators,environmental dynamics and managerial cognitive capabilities,are introduced to set research hypotheses,then a conceptual model of contextualized research of boundaryspanning search on discontinuous innovation of technology-based new ventures is formed.The results show that environmental dynamics plays a positive moderating effect between breadth search of technical knowledge,depth search of technical knowledge,breadth search of market knowledge and knowledge integration as well as ambidextrous capabilities,but those phenomena do not occur in depth search of market knowledge.Managerial cognitive capabilities plays a positive moderating role between four dimensions of boundary-spanning search and knowledge integration,it also plays a positive moderating role between four dimensions of boundary-spanning search and ambidextrous capabilities. |
