Mechanics by P.Magina from England was translated into Chinese by Yan Wenbing in 1906 in late Qing Dynasty. And it was authorized as the first college textbook for mechanics by the government in the twentieth century, which indicated Chinese had good mastery of elementary mechanics of western countries. So far no one has conducted systematic research into the content of Mechanics. The thesis conducts thorough research into the content and symbols in the Mechanics, contrasts them based on other works in the same field in late Qing dynasty, and further discusses their characteristics. This thesis introduces Mechanics through the background of the Chinese-translated works, compiled process and distribution situation, on the basis of which it summarizes the content of Mechanics, describes in detail the name of the book, Kinematics formula, Geometric construction method in solving problems, Newton's three laws of motion, power and energy, the key content of force synthesis and decomposition. Furthermore it analyzes the characteristics of Mechanics. Also the author compares Mechanics with other physical translation works in the same field in late Qing dynasty, summarizes the symbols and characters in each book and the system of symbols which appears in calculation formula and the characteristics of some content, showing "Chinese style" symbols of physical works in late Qing dynasty and their part metamorphosis.Mechanics as a textbook has the following qualities:teachable, designable, comprehensive and integrity, function-integrated, open and flexible. And meanwhile Mechanics is characterized as standard illustration, modernization of symbols, the novel method, clear formula, complete system, reasonable structure. From another point of view, this thesis also analyzes the confusing units and incorrect expression. In sum, Mechanics plays the important roles in the teaching methods and the variance of the translation process with the modernization of physics. Through the research into Mechanics, we know it reflects the localization of physics after a tortuous process, which has certain influence on the development of physical education in china.
