This thesis selects city proper, mining area, southern suburb and Xinrong District of Datong city as the research region. By scanning the map of Datong's land-use types and digitalizing the map with MAPGIS software to get the patches of the different land use type, we collect the patch information and set up both a corresponding spatial database and a property database. Based on the database, the characteristics of Datong's land-use landscape pattern are analyzed with EXCEL and SPSS softwares. The research results are as following:(1) There are ten kinds of land use types in the research areas and they are respectively, 1) cultivated land, 2) forest and orchard land, 3) grassland, 4) industrial and mining residence area, 5) vegetable land, 6) irrigated land, 7) water areas, 8) the land for special use, 9) unused land and 10) waste land. The distributions of the patch size in all ten kinds of land use types were extremely uneven in the area. The number of small patches in most land-use types constituted the majority of their patches, and both the big ones and middle ones in all the land-use types only had a small proportion. The areas of patches do not show a normal pattern of distribution, and most of them show a lognormal pattern of distribution. The cultivated land and the irrigated land were the two dominant patch types, and the waste land also accounted for a more larger proportion. Though the number and the total area of the forest and orchard land were larger, their average area was smaller than that of other types, so the degree of fragmentation of them was high under the influence of human activities.(2) The shape index 1 (SI1) of landscape patch decreased with the increase of the patch area, and the shape index 2 increased with the increase of the patch area. The SI2 indicated that the larger a patch was, the bigger the boundary value per hm2 was, and the less compact the patch shape was. The patch shape of both the land for special use and the forest and orchard land...
