RS and GPS provide technical support for collection of spatial information, and GIS creates the theoretical and technical architecture of spatial information processing and application from the aspect of quantity. However, spatial information is complex. Considering quantity, spatial information is mass. The kinds of spatial information not only have numerical type, character type, but also have figure type and image type. The correlation between spatial information is inherent. So, quantitative research of spatial information is not enough, and qualitative research is necessary. Qualitative spatial reasoning that is generated by combining qualitative reasoning, spatial reasoning and artificial intelligence (AI) has been a hotspot in the research of AI. Different from the researches of structure, action, function and their interconnections of physical system in qualitative physics, qualitative spatial reasoning analyzes and processes the human cognition of geometric spatial common knowledge. Different from the researches of modeling, descriptions, representations, relations'analysis and processing of spatial objects in spatial reasoning researching, qualitative spatial reasoning faces to the qualitative characters and qualitative relations of spatial objects. Qualitative spatial reasoning researches representation and process of human's qualitative cognition for spatial objects and their relations in geometric space. Firstly, the thesis introduced qualitative reasoning, spatial reasoning, spatial direction relations and the basic conception, investigation background and contends and actuality of spatial reasoning, confirm the related study fields of the thesis. Secondly, the paper concretely introduced the representation methods of spatial direction relations. Based on 2D character model, character string model is presented, and 14 rules applying one-dimensional character projection sequence to determine spatial direction relations are achieved. That character string model and D14 have the same classification representation capability of spatial direction relations. Further, the paper put the combinative table, one of the qualitative spatial reasoning methods, in practical use of spatial direction relations reasoning. Analyzing the internal relations and limits between topological relations and direction relations, the concept of one-dimension topological relations is presented, the method of direction and reasoning based on one-dimension topological relations is proposed. Finally, the paper built an archetypal system which combines the direction representation and the direction reasoning; validate the rationality and validity of the methods which be proposed above. The researches in this paper enrich and expand the theories for representation and reasoning of qualitative spatial direction relations, provide a suit of technology methods of direction relations reasoning based on one-dimension topological relations and improve the range of the direction reasoning. These researches provide a feasible path for improving analysis and proceeding capability of spatial information.
