GIS (geographical information system) has been widely used in many fields, such as resource research, evaluation, management and inspection; city management, programming, and city engineering administration management, special decision, disaster evaluation and forecast, geographical management and utilization, and traffic, agriculture, public security, etc. Relatively, thu development of spatial analytical function of GIS is slow. Meanwhile, the spatial target location, attribution expression and complex spatial relation expression between targets put the foundation of spatial analyses. In order to improve the capability of spatial analyses, we must find a solution that can accomplish the description and expression of spatial relationship.Qualitative spatial reasoning researches representation and process of human's qualitative cognition for spatial objects and their relations in geometric space. As the important part of spatial relation, topological relation is the base for constructing of GIS database, storing and querying of spatial character, and topological relation provides the base for spatial analysis too. Hence, the study of the spatial relationship and reasoning have important academic and practical scene in advancing the development of GIS. The component software technology has been the most important trend of software technology. In the concept mode of component0technology, a software system includes several object sets that working with each other. Each object may offer specific services and functions, which be published in a standard and open patterns, as to communicate with other objects.Firstly, this paper introduces the basic conception, investigation background and contend and actuality of qualitative spatial reasoning and component technology, and confirm the related study fields.Secondly, the representation methods for spatial topological relations and spatial topological relation reasoning are researched. Then the paper researches HBM (Hierarchy-based Method), a new method for classifying topological relations based on hierarchical cognition. And the combinative table reasoning methods of topological relation based on HBM are given.Further, the paper researches the acquisition and reduction of spatial knowledge library.
