Web-GIS is a hotspot in current GIS development. It is a new technology which extends and consummates Geographical Information System by using Internet technology. Its core technology is to embed HTTP and TCP/IP standard into Geographical Information System and to accomplish management of spatial information under Internet circumstance.This thesis begins with the influences of Internet on GIS. It firstly introduces the conception and basic principle of Web-GIS. Then it focuses some advanced technologies in Web-GIS development such as Java Applet, Servlet and JSP etc. It emphasis on introducing the structure of MapXtreme for Java platform.This thesis proposes a key technology which is the shortest path algorithm based on Web-GIS. To cope with the route determination, the algorithm is improved by using binary heap and adjacency list data structure based on the analysis of conventional Dijkstra shortest path algorithm. Furthermore, dynamic programming concept and limited direction search policy are further introduced through spatial distribution characteristics of road system in order to decrease the algorithm scale and raise operation efficiency.At last,the thesis introduces a client application named CE-WebGIS1.0 which is developed by using JBuilder with the digital map of Xi'an based on the platform of MapXtreme for Java. The application uses Java Applet as its core technology and combines the API provided by MapXtreme for Java to issue digital map on Web.
