GIS, standing for Geographic Information System, is a computer system composed of both hardware and software, aimed on collecting, managing, operating and analyzing spatial data. A GIS is an information system based on geographic coordinates with advanced capabilities consulting spatial data. In the recent several years, GIS and its correlative technologies has drawn great public interest while developing in a notable high rate. The rapid development of Internet technologies leads traditional GIS to develop network capabilities. WebGIS is a product of the conjunction of Internet and GIS technologies. WebGIS is essentially GIS with HTTP and TCP/IP standard system embeded, so as to achieve the functions of traditional GIS in the Internet environment.MapXtreme Java Edition, presented by MapInfo Corp., has several advantages compared with its competitors, e.g., it's platform-independent, component-based, object-oriented and it abides J2EE certification. Based on the considerations above, we employed MapXtreme Java Edition in our research.J2EE is an architecture based on Java2 platform, aimed on simplifying complex issues such as developing, deploying and managing enterprise-scale applications. We employ JSP, Servlet, JDBC etc., which are all key components of J2EE, to fulfill the tasks such as managing the interaction between the user and the map server and querying correlative data.In this essay, some principle concepts of GIS and WebGIS would be introduced first. To follow up, the inner mechanism of MapXtreme Java Edition would be explored. After that, there would be a discussion on the correlative technologies of WebGIS development. Finally, an instance of WebGIS will be designed and partly implemented.
