Tourism information system is a decision-supporting system which describes how to collect, store, process, analyze and output tourism information. Meanwhile, it is a computer technical system which stores tourism information in data form mainly through analyzing geographical model and can also provide much multi-space and dynamic tourism information, decision management to tourism management department and other service to all society. Web GIS refers to geographical information system which based on the internet and requires clients to use software according to the WWW agreement. It is a new technology using internet to extend and improve geographical information system and the key point is to use HTTP and TCP/IP in geographical information system to make sure the space information management on the internet.It is quite significant to build geographical information system for developing tourism, improving the public image of tourism, promoting tourism, helping decision-making in tourism management and managing tourism based on Web GIS. Xi'an is an outstanding historical city where tourism has become mainstay industry. Therefore, it is quite important how to guarantee the quality of tourism service and enhance tourism awareness, how to expand tourism publicity and how to provide better service for tourists. In responding to these requirements, it is very significant to build a geographical information system for Xi'an using the advanced internet geographical information management technology to supply modern tourism information service using its managing function. It will be an inexorable trend to build geographical information system in the development and management of city tourism on Web GIS.This thesis mainly focuses on the following four parts:The first part focuses on analyzing the current situation of studying geographical information system and the development of the traditional and modern GIS both in China and abroad. At the same time, based on the census program of Shaanxi tourism resources, which the author took part in, the author analyzes and judges the tourism resources in Xi'an according to The Classification, Investigation and Evaluation of Tourism Resources (GB/T18972-2003) published by China in May 1st 2003 and lists the good tourism resources in Xi'an which will be used in the development of Xi'antourism information system.The second part covers the study of technology of building Web GIS, the development, the characteristics, the function, the structure, the work pattern and the technology of Web GIS and the comparison of several Web GIS both from China and abroad. In this part, the author also makes the choice of the Web GIS for the exploration of the tourism resources information system in Xi'an.The third part focuses on the building of Xi'an GIS plat, the structure of GIS server and the structure of clients' software and hardware and the software used in system development, especially on ASP.NET and MapXtreme.The fourth part covers the analysis, design and the building of GIS in Xi'an based on the Web GIS plat. This part mainly focuses on the demand analysis, general and detailed design of GIS in Xi'an based on Web GIS, especially on the detailed design of the function of the system, the classification and coding and the classification of pictures of the basic and tourism data of the system. At the same time, this part introduces how to code and use the key technology in developing the system, and introduces the function of the main interface, the function of collecting and managing data of the system, the choosing and enquiring function of the system, the space analyzing function, the function of displaying the virtual scenic spots, the function of changing buses and safeguarding the system security.This thesis takes Xi'an as an example, mainly focusing on using XML to design GIS based on Web GIS and introducing the structure and the characteristics of this system. The main purpose of this thesis is to search for a new method to store the tourism data and resources which distribute far and wide and to put all these data and resources on the internet helping tourists to book and register tourism products.
