A Study On The Science And Technology In The Peking Magazine

Westernization Movement was the first attempt to modernize China, in which spreading sciences and technology was an indispensable part. Sci-tech periodical played a key role in the process of spreading science and technology in modern times. The Peking Magazine, which served as the first comprehensive sci-tech periodical in Peking at that time, was of great significance in the process. At present, the systematical studies on scientific and technological contents in the Peking Magazine have not been made, so the article is to discuss the scientific and technological contents in the Peking Magazine. The main work is as follows:I. On the basis of previous studies, this thesis discussed and summarized the background, cause of creation, contents, authors of the Peking Magazine, and the relations between the Peking Magazine and the Chinese Scientific Magazine. It pointed out that the Peking Magazine was the product of Westernization Movement, and that the Peking Magazine based on the School of Combined Learning in Peking, sponsored by western missionaries was significant to the spreading of Western science and technology to China.II. This thesis analyzed the contents on astronomy, mathematics, physics, medicine,mechanical, engineering and the history of science and technology in the Peking Magazine systematically in the first time, and found that the scientific and technological knowledge in the Peking Magazine played an active part in the spreading of science and technology knowledge of the West to China, although it had poor scientific value on the whole.III.
