This paper mainly discusses the role that journals and mass organizations onmathematics played in the spread of mathematics in the end of Qing dynasty. AfterOpium Wars,several journals, including Shanghae serlals(《六合从谈》),the PekingMagazine(《中西闻见录》,the Chinese Scientific Magazine (《格致汇编》),A Miscellanyof Useful Knowledge(《益智新录》)etc.,were published by missionaries,With thesejournals publishing and spreading,the concept of science was received by lots of people.Among the journals,the Chinese Scientific Magazine possessed a large circulation and a great influence,which impelled the people who advocated reformation to start setting upnewspaper offices and publishing journals after Jia Wu War(甲午战争).A lot ofmathematical knowledge was included in the journals,such as Xing Xue Bao(《湘学报》),Sin Hsion Pao(《新学报》),Ya Quan Za Zhi(《亚泉杂志》),and Pu Tong Xue Bao(《普通学报》)and so on.At the same time,journals on mathematics appeared,includingSuan Xue Bao(《算学报》),Zhong Wai Suan Bao(《中外算报》),Shu Xue Za Zhi(《数学杂志》)etc.,and mathematics was attached importance particularly in them.There wasplentiful knowledge on mathematics in these journals.Textbook were supplementedwith many Chinese traditional achievements on mathematics,such as Kao Shu Gen Fa(《考数根法》)written by Li Shanlan(李善兰)and Ping Yuan Hu Rong Xin Yi(《平圆'容新义》)written by Zhou Da(周达).On the other hand,the knowledge on highermathematics from Western,such as Calculus and Algebra,laid the foundation formodemization of mathematics in modem China.After Jia Wu War,mathematicseducation Was thought highly,and many mass organizations on mathematics appeared,including Rui An Xue Ji Guan(瑞安学计馆),Liu Yang Suan Xue Guan(浏阳算学馆),and Zhi Xin Suan She(知新算社)etc..Mathematics courses were offered in them,whichfurther impelled the dissemination of mathematics in the end of Qing dynasty....
