The Fire Fighting Situation (FFS) refers to the spatial distribution of fire fighting strength. GIS is the technical foundation of FFS. We can acquire and display the distribution of fire fighting strength and the situation information (such as position and state etc.) of the fire engines at the scene of the fire via GIS.The purpose of this paper is to research the FFS system based on GIS. By analyzing the key techniques of the FFS system, we designed and implemented the related applied system. This system can gather the detailed fire information, the statistical information of the fire fighting strength and the position and state information of fire engines in real-time when a fire takes place. It can display the process of the fire fighting rescue action more dramatically and intuitively. With the help of this system, the fire department can make a decision more efficiently. The main contributions of this paper are:1. We analyse the requirement of displaying the FFS information in urban fire fighting correspondence commanding system, and explore the application of GIS in FFS system.2. We research the key techniques used in FFS system, including the technology of GPS, the management of remote sensing (RS) imagery data and the integration of GPS, GIS and RS.3. This paper proposed a complete solution of a real urban FFS system. It implemented the displaying of the fire information, the statistical information of the fire fighting strength and the situation information of the fire engines in the process of fire fighting rescue action. It also implemented some operations on electronic map. This system has been formally put to use and was working stably.
