Study Of Jiao Xun's Mathematics And Astronomy Works

In the earlier Qing dynasty ,the western mathematics and astronomy are popularized widely among the people, Xi Yang Xin Fa Li Shu was the typical book in the period. But later it was refrained from learning and recommending Western advanced science and civilization, because the theory"Western Knowledge Originated From Ancient China", sprang up with textual research during the period from Qian Long to Qian Jia Dynasty. The scholars at that time held two different opinions: some of them insisted that Western Knowledge Originated From Ancient China and they firmly believed Chinese mathematics was superior to Western mathematics with recovering and studying the ancient works. Others of them held in esteem western learning especially. However the later is criticized by the most scholars. Certainly, there were some scholars who could appraise A Combination of Chinese and Western Elements. Jiao Xun, one of"three friendly astronomers", such a scholar.Jiao Xun, studied the Western mathematics systematically and finished his works named as A Study On Arc, A Study On The Wheel Of Heavenly Body and A Study On The Ellipse, used the research of Mei Wending , Li Xiang Kao Cheng and Li Xiang Kao Cheng Hou Bian with Western mathematics and astronomy. In these works, Jiao Xun expressed his thought, in which and opinions were as consistent as the former, some widened at the base of the former, others being amended.The thesis studied Jiao Xun's study on Western mathematics and astronomy, including the following five parts.1) The thesis explains the background related to the main body of the thesis and the former achievement and the thought of the author, in addition, introduces the life of Jiao Xun and the content of Li Tang Xue Suan Ji.2) The thesis discusses the spherical trigonometry in A Study On Arc, analyzes the solutions of Jiao Xun, Mei Wending and Dai Z hen and points out the difference. He has improved Mei's solution and made the calculation simple systematic process.3) The thesis studies the theory and calculation about heaven body running in the Tychonian celestial system in A study On The Wheel Of Heavenly Body and points out Jiao Xun had different opinions from Mei Wending and Jiang Yong. inaddition ,the author discusses the communication among Jiao Xun ,Li Rui and Qian Da Xin.4) The thesis introduces the knowledge of Cassini ellipse in A Study On The Ellipse, and analyzes the Jiao Xun's research based on Li Xiang Kao Cheng Hou Bian to it . He made the ellipse systematic and theoretical.5) The thesis outlines Jiao Xun's study and his contribution for A Combination of Chinese and Western elements.
