Spatial database has been becoming one of the hottest issues in GIS field in recent years. And it is spatial database engine (SDE) that enables it to structure spatial data, to query and analyze spatial interrelated data efficiently, and to mining underlying information. So, it is of fundamental importance to study SDE technologies both in practice and theory.This paper introduces the current situation and development trends of SDE in China and over the world, and also the basic functions and features of SDE. In this paper, Oracle Spatial has been chosen as a typical research object with its own advantages. It analyzes the physical and logical storage model of Oracle Spatial, including the storage model of vector data, raster data and spatial index. And the paper also discuss how to use Oracle Spatial to accomplished the spatial data transferring interface and the publishing of data stored in Oracle Spatial. The spatial data transferring interface has implemented the function of transferring the vector data and raster data to Oracle Spatial each other, meanwhile the publishing model has implemented the Internet publishing of the data stored in Oracle Spatial with MapViewer.In the end, the paper compares Oracle Spatial with other SDE products and lists the advantages and disadvantages of it. The principle of How to choose SDE products in practical projects is illustrated as well.
