Three Dimensional City Model(short for 3DCM) is the one of most important information foundation data of Digital City construction. Currently, most models of Digital City were built via 3D MAX, Creator or other professional Modeling tools. Although these models contain more detail and express more vivid, they need more resource in runtime rendering environment. And create so many models in Digital City is very time-consuming. Therefore, much more attention was paid on how to build models more effective and more reasonable.Firstly, the paper introduces the basic conception of the digital city and the background of this paper--"digital Foshan city layout system", and modeling problem which is the difficulty of the Digital City. Secondly, the research status in domestic and overseas base on this problem is analyzed in this paper. The building model's data acquisition, data organization, data management and the model construction method are also discussed in this paper. During the analysis and architecture knowledge, make building model into two parts to implement modeling is brought forward. In this process, utilize the 2DGIS data to create profile of the building, and them make the roof which user appointed. We divided building roof into four classes via their appearance, and designed algorithm respective.Based on the model, the author discussed how to convert it to standard modeling file--OpenFlight. This file can load into digital city runtime rendering environment directly and make nice effect.Finally, the author makes a conclusion of the whole thesis and some problems worthy of deeper study are put forward.
