The geological map is the necessity when engaged in geological works. With the development of the informationization and the improvement of the technology in China, the geological map database has become the trend of geological mapping. The geological map database based on GIS is convenient for the storage, inquiry, analysis, updating of the geological data. It also carries out the information sharing.This paper which takes Geological map database of Yining sheet(K-44) at 1:1M for example introduces the method of building geological map and geographic map database, including data preparing, mapping design, spatial and attribute data processing, projection conversion, map combining, database construction, data examine based on MAPGIS platform. The author has obtained the development and cognition as following:1. During the geological mapping and database building process based on MapGIS. lots of literatures and maps has been collected and analyzed. The mapping and database building procedure which establish the basement of the work has been constructed.2. The geographic base map contains a great of geographic elements that needed to divide to several layers. The method of converting ARCGIS data to MAPGIS data has been explored and mastered. The domestic geographic contents to the foreign ones have been linked. The geographic contents have been updated and accepted or rejected. Each layer has its attribute table. The codes are designed according to the national standard.3. The Stratigraphical sequence of the mapping area is established after analyzed and applied the geological data which combined the actual data obtained from field survey. The geological bodies are simplified and united according to the precision of 1:1M geological map. The geological contents are linked to the adjacent areas. The geological boundaries are smoothed and magnified. The parameters of spot, line and plane are modified after topology process. The attribute structures and their contents are established.4. This program improves the understandability of the mapping method, mapping theory, and database technology. The data editing, data converting, projection converting, map sheet emendation are applied by using MAPGIS software. The procedure and manner of the geological mapping and database building at the scale of 1:1M is developed. The database makes the spatial data and attribute data "one-to-one correspond", which in favor of data query and analysis.5. With the development of the geological survey, new data and achievements come forth. So the geological database needs to update constantly. Then it can reflect the new achievements obtained from the geological survey these years. The WebGIS technology can be used in the future work. The geological map database can be promulgated on internet which brings out the geological investigation fruit to the social. It is also in favor of the data query by geological workers. So the information can be shared wildly.
