The occurrences of weather phenomena are often interdependent and interrelated, and the data from different sources which we get are also interrelated, so multi-source data comprehensive analysis, will be an important trend in lightning disaster research. In daily work currently, the so-called combination of multi-source data, which is often realized by simple visual comparison analysis through opening different software at the same time, is Complicated to operate, and difficult to get obvious comparison result. Therefore, it is urgent to establish software systems which compatible with multi-source data in a unified geographical coordinates framework. Geographical Information System, in particular the component Geographic Information System (comGIS) provides the best conditions to address the issue.Accordingly, under the Microsoft .NET framework, in Visual C# programming language, supporting by international advanced ArcGIS Engine 9.2 technology, we established the Multi-source Meteorological Information Overlay and Analysis System integrating a variety of data in the field of meteorology. The system can be divided into the following parts(functions): 1. Multi-source data read function. It helps to read lightning positioning data, geostationary meteorological satellite images, automatic monitoring station data, geographical background information, Doppler weather radar images, etc, involves the study of the files format, coordinates conversion and spatial interpolation; 2. Multi-source data overlay function. In this part, overlay analysis of five type of data based on the Unified projection coordinates is performed, it involves the image format compatibility problems in ArcGIS Engine components and methods of establishing and converting of projection coordinates; 3. Data mining and analysis function. It includes three kinds of analysis namely spatial topological analysis, timing analysis and fitting analysis on the basis of overlay analysis, and the analysis results can be provided in form of charts; 4. Animation function. It includes separate animation and combined animation for multi-source data; 5. Mapping and print output functions. Based on powerful mapping ability of ArcGIS Engine 9.2, it realizes the function of mapping, printing, outputting the analysis result. The Multi-source Meteorological Information Overlay and Analysis System realized integration of lightning positioning data and other types of data. It makes us more easily study the relationship between weather phenomena via various analysis methods such as overlay analysis, topological analysis, timing analysis and fitting analysis. In short, it provides a new method for meteorological research.
