The Digital Sand Table, breaking through the original conception and function of traditional material sand table, possesses many new functions, in which the stereo picture can be displayed against 2D—plane map, the observation position, altitude, direction and angle of view and so on can be regulated arbitrarily, and it can simulate the flight observation up the sky following the scheduled routine to get a real-time bird's- eye view. Moreover, the Digital Sand Table possesses the functions of drawing the sectional map of topography, calculating the surface area of arbitrary region, and the cubic meter of earth & stone (storage of reservoir) etc. The Digital sand table, as an interactively operating and real-time virtual reality circumstance, and a new product with integration of many kinds of high-techs, is highly appreciated in many fields.This text, through analyzing the technological change and development in manufacturing the sand table, and its current researching situation both at home and abroad, based on temporal GIS and spatio- temporal data model theory, combining the variability of the spatio-temporal data source and the characteristics of the multi-source spatio-temporal data model, and choosing the large-scale GIS platform developed and autonomously copyrighted by Wuhan Zondy Information Engineering Company, which can connect massive data, various data pattern and division management, as the basis platform, design and establish Shannxi digital sand table system in order to lay new foundation for the application and development of the GIS platform sand table technology developed in China.
