The rise of gas discharge experiment in 19th century, and the study of cathode rays on nature, led directly to the three knowledge discovery of physics and the birth of a series of new discipline and new technology. This period of history is very important in history of science and technology, appears lots of theses.This article write the title again, is due to previous research mostly on conceptual analysis, and the investigation in the instrument in slightly too coarse. Physics is empirical science, it depends on the instrument to do experiment, so in order to understand the development of physics better, we need further investigation on experimental apparatus. So the article will investigate this period of history again from the angle of instrument change.This article has four chapters. The first chapter reviews the rise of gas discharge experiment in the 19th century. The second chapter reviews the main instrument in physics laboratory and the research situation of cathode around 1895. The third chapter analysis the necessity of physics revolutionary at the turn of the century under the background of instrument and laboratory. The fourth chapter discuss the product of cathode ray like CRT and PDP, and their social influence.The first argument in this thesis is to prove a point" physics is decided by the instrument and equipment".The second argument is that the rise of gas discharge experiment and research about the nature of cathode rays in 19th century led directly to the three knowledge discovery of physics and then lead to the revolution of physics at the turn of the century. It has a very important position is the history of science.Finally, we pointed out that rise of gas discharge experiment in the 19th century brings a series of application, such as neon tubes, CRT, PDP, as a by-product.The cathode ray experiment has so many experimental research projects, it is unusual in the whole history of science and is worth doing further research and discussion.
