Fixing agent using is widely accepted as a means of improving the fastness of dyes on cellulosic fabrics. The color-fixing theories and current situation of studies of non-formaldehyde fixing agents(CFXs) were reviewed in this dissertation. The purposes of this work are to satisfy the demand of developed countries'for CFXs and solve current problems in the development and use of CFXs, thus several kinds of CFXs were prepared by using dimethyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC) as major components and then the color-fixing properties of these CFXs were investigated. The main content of this dissertation is listed as follows:(1) DMDAAC were synthesized and the synthesis method were investigated. Afterward, three polymers were respectively prepared by polymerization of methylacrylate or ethyl acrylate or acrylamide in the presence of DMDAAC. Relative reaction conditions were also investigated.(2) A polymer containing UV-absorbing groups were synthesized by using DMDAAC as major component and then its UV absorbing properties were measured.(3) To determine the effectiveness of fixing agents on the color fastness of commercial reactive dyes on fabric, the washed-off, dyed cotton and hemp fiber samples were treated with each of the four fixing agents aforementioned and the resultant dyeings then subjected to the dry fastness test, the wet fastness test, the soaping fastness test and the white fastness test. The color strength and hand feeling of the dyeings were also assessed.(4) A fixing agent containing aromatic groups were synthesized and its color-fixing properties for acid dyes on wool fabric were measured. In the case of acid dyeing, aftertreatment with the fixing agents was carried out using the same apparatus as used for reactive dyeing. The following tests were performed as previously mentioned. The results revealed are as follows:(1) The fastness of reactive dyes on cotton fabric and hemp fabric can be markedly improved by aftertreating the dyeings with our fixing agent. The finding that, in the case of using reactive dyes, the aftertreatment with CFX(5) imparted a greater improvement in color fastness than aftertreatment with other CFXs. The dyeings with CFX(5) possess dry fastness ratings achieved to grade 5, wet fastness ratings achieved to grade 3, soaping fastness ratings achieved to grade 4-5, white fastness ratings achieved to grade 4-5, whilst those fabrics have stable color strength and good hand-feeling. It is indicated that CFX(5) provide a good color-fixing effect and even better at some kinds of tests than some commercial fixing agents.(2)The synthesized CFX (10), which containing UV-absorbing groups, has a high color-fixing effect on cotton fabric.(3)Aftertreatment, with CFX(11), of the wool fabric and wool-silk mixed fabric which had been dyeing with acid dyes resulted in an improvement of dry fastness, wet fastness and washing fastness of the dyeings. In addition, the color strength and the hand-feeling have also been improved. This research work have laid a good foundation for further study and preparation of multi-purposes CFXs, especially for the preparation of new excellent performances CFXs qualified for international market.
