Garment design is a powerful weapon in the market competition of the clothing productionindustry. Traditional garment design exists some shortcomings, for example, the production costis high, the production period is long, the resource is wasted, etc. Garment CAD technologyprovides the possibility for solving these problems. With the development of virtual reality and3D garment modeling techniques, 3D garment CAD as a new garment design method has beenapplied widely. Now, 3D garment CAD includes each step during the garment design phase suchas clothing style design, garment pattern design, production line design, fabric image design,virtual clothing try-on. According to the design features of 3D garment CAD, the research onboundary extraction and editing on digital garment mesh models can provide the theoreticalfoundation on 3D digital garment modeling, digital clothing style design and the shape diversityof 3D digital garments.Based on the theory of 3Dgarment CAD, this thesis uses knowledge of computer graphicsand other related technologies to have the research on boundary extraction and editing of digitalgarments such as realizing the boundary extension and cutting effect on 3D digital garment meshmodels. The detailed content is as follows:(1) It comprehensively analyzes current research situation about 3D digital garment editing,points out its important research significance and wide application prospects.(2) It does the pretreatment for 3D garment mesh models exported from 3D scanningequipment, such as judging and removing isolated triangles; repairing the holes in garment meshmodels; using improved mean filter algorithm to smooth 3D garment models. This pretreatmentis utilized for the following boundary extraction and editing.(3) It has the research on pick-up operation which is frequently used on garment meshmodel design and virtual clothing try on system. Here we use the needle puncturing method byjudging the intersection situation between the ray and the plane to interactively pick up 3D datafrom 3D garment models. It can conveniently and rapidly capture pick-up information. (4) It presents a new method for extracting and extending boundary areas of 3D garmentmesh models. We firstly extract border points, then use the non-uniform B-spine curve of degreethree to interpolate them and calculate the length of each boundary line to get relevant garmentinformation. Finally, we construct a parallel tangent plane based on border points to add newpoints and create the extended border surface by the triangulation process. It can get goodboundary extending effect for garment models.(5) It introduces a new boundary cutting method on 3D garment mesh models. We firstlypick up boundary area of garment mesh models and build the cutting plane according to themaximum bounding box to do cut and intersection operation. The garment model is then dividedinto two dependent sections after intersection operation between the cutting plane and trianglesand mesh reconstruction operation for those cut triangles. Finally we translate correspondinggarment parts along to the opposite direction of cutting plane to obtain the separated garmentmodel and remove redundant parts of garment model. It can obtain good boundary cutting resultsfor 3D garment models.In the end of this paper, it summarizes current work and gives the development prospect ofthis research.
