Ball mill plays an indispensable role as the most widely used grating equipment in metallurgy, construction, chemistry, power industries, etc. It can been said that productivities of these industries are greatly determined by ball mill. Effect of ball milling is related to grinding media motion. The grinding effect is accomplished by the interactions of impact and abrasion of grinding media. Therefore, it is both necessary and significant to thoroughly study the motion of grinding media. This research has studied the grinding media motion in aφ600×700mm grinding machine using discrete element method (DEM).Based on the theoretical analysis of grinding media motion, discrete element method software PFC was applied to simulate motion patterns of the various grinding media, obtain the date of media trajectories, and establish the trajectories equation of each layer of grinding media. Then parametric modeling of the ball mill was conducted using mixed programming technology. For the next step of parameter optimization, the relationship between different sets of rotating rates and filling rates with medium motion was investigated, through the comparison of corresponding crushing energy between grinding media by the parametric program. Propos factor lever was selected, experiment points were confirmed using the orthogonal experiment optimizing methodology and finally each experiment point was analyzed respectively by DEM software PFC, to achieve the target of a required effective power of the ball mill in certain time steps. After that, the optimum levels of each parameter, optimum parameter combination and value of effective power under the best scheme were worked out processing the experiments data using range method. Conclusions of this research has enhanced the theoretical research of medium motion in a grinding machine in certain extent and provided some practical references to the production of grinding machines.
