With comparison to traditional flame retardant polymer, Polymer nanocomposites have unique flame retardant properties, such as little addition, non-halogen, and little effect on mechanical properties. For this reason, the research of high flame retardant polymer nanocomposites is becoming an important task in the worldwide, but its flame retardant properties can not meet with. As far as we know, no work has been done on the synergistic effect of Attapulgite (ATP) in PP/IFR blends. This work focus on the investigation of the flammability characterization and synergistic mechanism of ATP with IFR in the PP/IFR blends.PP/ATP and PP/IFR flame retardant composites and PP/IFR/ATP flame retardant composites are prepared by melt-blending process. The flame retardant actions of PP composites are studied using limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 test. It is found that the flame retardant of the PP/IFR/ATP composite is higher than the flame retardant of the PP/ATP and PP/IFR composites.The synergistic mechanism is caused by formation of silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO) structure formed by reactions between the phosphoric acid generated on heating from IFR and ATP. The tensile strength and Izod impact strength are investigated, and the results show that the presence of ATP can enhance the tensile strength and Izod impact strength of PP/IFR composites slightly. In order to improve mechanical properties of PP/IFR/ATP composites, ATP is treated with KH550. The results show that the silane coupling agent is found to be covalently bonded to ATP and the mechanical properties can be slightly improved. Further improve the flame retardanct properties of PP/IFR/ATP composites, APP (MCAPP) are synthesized by microencapsulating ammonium polyphosphate with melamine-formaldehyde (MF) and urea-melamine-formaldehyde (UMF) resin coating layer respectively. And the flame retardant composites, comprised with ATP and MCAPP / PER / PP are prepared by melt-blending process. The flame retardancy and mechanical properties of PP/MFAPP/PER/ATP composites are improved obviously. The main reason is that further combustion of this composite is prevented due to the formation of char on the surface during the combustion process of PP/MCAPP/PER/ATP composite.
