To develop applications of a new multifunctional polymer additive, the application mechanisms of N-Chloropolyacrylamide (N-Cl-PAM) to materials used for papermaking in China were investigated. Effects of the facts such as amounts of NaOCl and NaOH, reaction temperature further, and the optimized conditions for the preparation were discussed. In chapter 3, the fiber distribution, total and surface charges of kraft soft wood pulp, reed chemical pulp, soft mechanical pulp and waste pulp were characterized. It was found that there are great differences in the fiber properties between kraft soft wood pulp and reed chemical pulp. Two PDADMACs with different molecular weight were first used to investigate pore distribution on pulp surfaces. In chapter 4, the effects of N-Cl-PAM on drainage, retention and paper strength of the four pulp were reported. The effects of pulp properties, especially surface charge on function of N-Cl-PAM were discussed. The results show that N-Cl-PAM exhibited better function in reed chemical pulps than in kraft softwood pulp, and is effective papermaking additive for materials used for papermaking industry in China.
