With the continuous development of printing technology and printing equipments, the paper printability becomes more and more important. In order to meet the need of enhancing paper printing adaptability, we need to study the ways to improve the paper properties. Therefore, using additive and surface sizing are ways ,which is common but efficient to improve paper printability. This thesis mainly includes two parts as following: in the first part, we make studies on using chitson and polyacrylamide separately to improve the properties of paper, and compare the effect of them based on experimental results. Then, we studied the different results of paper properties, which are effected by the mixture of chitson and polyacrylamide(PAM) in different proportioning by volume. Further more, we try to make out the better proportion of chitson to PAM.Considering the fact that chitson and its derivates are expensive, and oxidized starch is commonly used while not very good enough to improve the properties of paper, we expand to study on the effect of using surface sizing agents, which are oxidized starch mixed with chitson or its derivates in the second part. We also compare the different effect of oxidized starch, chitson, HTTC and carboxymethyl chitosan(CMCTS), which are used as surface sizing agent respectively. At last, we try to find out a better proportion of oxidized starch with chitson or its derivates, through a series of studies, on sizing them on the surface of base paper and handsheets.
