Chitosan is the most abundant natural amino polysaccharide, and can be used in various fields of analytical chemistry because it demonstrates an ability to adsorb not only metal ions but also non-metallic substance. It have also been selected as enzyme immobilization material because of an unusual combination of its properties, which include excellent membrane-forming ability, good adhesion, good biocompatibility, high mechanical strength, and reactive amino and hydroxyl functional groups.Chemically modified electrode is currently an active area of research. It can be designed according to our demand, and have shown splendid prospects in sensitivity and selectivity. In this paper, we have prepared the chitosan modified glass carbon electrode and schiff base chitosan modified glass carbon electrode by using chitosan and its derivatives as a modified reagent and by applying the method of covalent-bond reaction. These modified electrodes can be used for the determination of trace amounts of hydroquinone, NO2 and iodine in environmental samples, and its sensitivity is greater than that of the unmodified glass carbon electrode. The detection limit is 1 10-7mol/L for hydroquinone, 2 10-7 mol/L for NO2- and 2 10-7 mol/L for iodine. Under selected experimental conditions, selectivity and reproducibility are satisfactory. Consequently, chitosan modified electrode have been used to design glucose electrochemical biosensor. A thin films of glucose oxidase was immobilized on the surface of chitosan modified electrode. The sensor could optionally reacts with only glucose in 0.1 mol/L phosphate buffer (pH=7.0), and can be used for the determination of glucose.
