In this paper, the "green" thinking is introduced into the research and application of separation engineering after analyzing the process synthesis technology of green chemistry and environmental impact minimization. Then, the concept of "Green Separation Engineering", and its research subjects and methods, are proposed. To perform the green separation engineering, the most important problem faced is how to evaluate the environmental impact of process system. Process system discharges hazardous waste into environment, and mainly impacts environment in this way. Impact flow is introduced to characterize the process system environmental impact properties. Environmental impact is obtained through chemical discharging rate multiplied by a value, which indicates the degree of chemical environmental impact. Then, the whole impact of process system is the sum of all impact flows. This paper proposed an index named "Chemical Green Index", which is based on the methods of environmental impact evaluation of chemical.Refinery is a typical unit operation of separation process. When discussing environmental impact of refinery process, both energy and process waste should be considered, because it consumes a lot of energy. A method to evaluate environmental impact of refinery process system is presented on the basis of analyzing refinery process properties. In this paper, an example of refinery system of cyclohexanone is discussed. According to the different flow simulation results, the environmental impact of refinery system is analyzed. By contrasting a process and its improved process with integration, a conclusion is drawn, that is, process integration is an effective means to realize "Green Separation Engineering".
