With industrial society having been transformed into post-industrial society, the traditional industry bases depending on water were most probably declined. As a result, the redevelopment of declined pier and industrial estate of waterfront became the popular subject in the field of urban redevelopment and design all around the world nowadays. From the time of 1920's, there have already had plenty of successful redevelopments of waterfront in Europe and America, which produced a set of systematic theory of waterfront redevelopment. Compared that with Europe and America, the research of waterfront redevelopment in China has just made a start. Therefore, the study, proposed from this background, has an attempt to discuss a serial of problems such as how to recognize the declined pier and industrial estate of waterfront, how to redevelop it, how to protect it and how to design it. The article, with an attitude of respect for history and industrial culture on the redevelopment of declined pier and industrial estate, suggests that the waterfront redevelopment should be combined with the preservation and reuse of the industrial architecture, and make its way to the sustainable development, only in this way can the local figure and site spirit of urban waterfront be shown forth.Starting from the fundamental research, the article first briefly interprets related concepts and connotations of the subject, analyzes the reasons leading pier and industrial estate of waterfront to decline, and points out it is necessary to redevelop the declined waterfront. Then, the article discusses the difficulty, the aim and the value of the redevelopment of pier and industrial estate of waterfront, and introduces the redevelopment moulds in Europe and America with a number of practical examples. Furthermore, on the base of the experiences and lessons of waterfront redevelopment gained from developed western countries, the article, in view of the fault of waterfront redevelopment in China, raises the sustainable development value of waterfront redevelopment, which is aim to make waterfront redevelopment in the tendency of beneficial development of economy, ecology and society as a whole.How to guarantee the sustainable development of waterfront development? At the middle level, the answer is to attach an importance on effect of urban design, which, regarded as a technical measure, should be applied through out the process of redevelopment. The paper sums up the principles of urban design of waterfront with examples, andelaborately selects some designs of three international consultations of urban design of waterfront for analysis, so that the concrete methods and the new conceptions of urban design of waterfront are presented vividly.As far as the redevelopment of pier and industrial estate is concerned, the preservation and reuse of industrial architecture is considered as one of the outstanding aspects, which, at the micro-level, can embody the sustainable development of waterfront redevelopment. Hence, having taken several international charters on preservation of historical architecture and site for reference, the thesis proposes the evaluation standard of the industrial architectures, and probes the principles and methods of preservation and reuse of them with practical examples.At the end of the article, the theory of sustainable redevelopment of pier and industrial estate which are mentioned above are applied into the practical redevelopment of Wuchang waterfront. Having looked back the history of Wuchang waterfront and analyzed the present problems lying there, the article puts forward the strategies of redevelopment and dramatizes the wonderful blueprint of Wuchang waterfront by urban design.
