Today the atmosphere pollution and the damage to ecologic balance caused by sulfur dioxide discharge has been paid wide attention in the world. The main use of energy in China almost depends on the source of coal which lead to a great amount of sulfur dioxide emission in China. So it becomes very important for China to find out the measures to limit sulfur dioxide discharge and to search good process of the desulfurization of flue gas.The Research Institute for Chemical Engineering of Coal of Taiyuan University of Technology has more than twenty years experience in the field of desulfurization study of gas purification. In the end of years'90, the Research Institute, acting professor Li Chunhu as a header, begins to work at technology of sulfur dioxide adsorption by semi-coke catalyst. Both desulfurization test of laboratory and demonstration model test have been finished. The design of middle test of desulfurization and the plan of industrialization production of catalyst have been done.Semi-coke is a kind of loose carbon material with much micropore. Passed process of activation, it will possess some functions of chemical reaction with sulfur dioxide by adsorption or catalysis. Compared with other methods of desulfurization, the semi-coke desulfurization technology of flue gas has many advantages, for example, raw material obtain easy and price is cheap, operation costs is low, process of desulfurization is simple and do notcause second pollution.On the basis of Liu Qingya and Li Zhihong's test datum of laboratory, the model and the demonstration test plan have been done with desulfurization of sulfur dioxide from flue gas by semi-coke catalyst in factory. The principle of desulfurization process and the technical problem of industrialization production also are discussed in the paper.All datum of model test in factory are better than in laboratory. But some datum, for instance, catalyst life and decay time of sulfur capacity, anti-smash capacity of catalyst, pressure drop in catalyst bed, must further be verified by middle test because the plant and time for model test is too small.Although No.l and No.2 preparation methods of activated semi-coke have exhibited a pretty well performance of sulfur removal during laboratory test, they still have some problems to be solved in order to be applied as a maintain catalyst in the industrial process. Firstly, the physical properties of activated semi-coke, including sulfur capacity and space velocity and mechanical strength, should be further modified further. Secondly, some preparation equipments, including hydrothermal chemical reactor and high temperature activated furnace and specialty pulverizing for semi-coke, have difficulty in enlargement production and technology. Therefore, the opinion combined organically coal blending and coal dry distillation and semi-coke activated with preparation process of catalyst is put forward in the paper so that the capacities of semi-coke catalyst areimproved and the production costs of semi-coke catalyst are reduced.
