The research status of electroluminescent materials and devices using europium complexes as emitter was reviewed in this dissertation. The synthesis of and the properties of red organic electroluminescent devices (OELD) with europium complexes were studied in order to improve the carrier properties and emitting brightness of the OELD. Two series of neutral ligands and their europium complexes were synthesized and the relationships of these complexes structures and their luminescence properties were discussed. The results from ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV) and photo -luminescence(PL) spectroscopy revealed that: (1) Europium complexes based on neutral ligands, such as azaphenanthroline 2-aryl-5- ( α -pyridyl) -1,3,4-ozadiazole had a strong UV absorbance at the wavelength of 290-350 nm and the characteristic PL spectrum of europium ion at 613 nm respectively; (2) The structures of ligands had a critical role influence on PL intensity of europium complexes. Two series of ligands synthesized could improve europium complexes; (3) Compared with the fluorescent spectra of solution and film of a europium complex , the maximal excited wavelength from film of a europium complex had a blue shift of 60 nm than one from the same europium complex. Electroluminescent studies indicated that OELD using Eu (DBM) 3R-OXD as guest and the polymer PVK as host had a maximal brightness of 15cd/m2 and the brightness of OELD depended strongly on the structures of europium complexes. In addition, the brightness of OELD related to the energy transfer between host and guest molecules. For example, although Eu(DBM)3MeO-OXD had a stronger of pL intensity than Eu(DBM)3F-OXD, the EL intensityof Eu(DBM)3MeO-OXD was only one fourth of that of Eu(DBM)3 F-OXD. It was true that the luminescence properties of europium complexes could be optimized by modifying the structures of ligands. In summary, this research was laid a better foundation to further study of the effects of the second ligands on the electroluminescence properties of europium complexes, and achieved OELD with excellent EL properties.
