Mineral resources are the basic condition for human subsistence and development, mining exploitation is an important part of development and activity of human society, also is the materials guarantee of building China into a powerful modern country. However, a large amount of tailings produced with mineral resources exploited extensively have seriously, threatened human subsisting environment. Comprehensive utilization of tailings resources plays an important part in saving on the resources, improving on the environment, increasing in the economic benefit, promoting the change of increasing mode of the economy, realizing optimal disposition of mineral resources and sustainable development of national economy.The research on ilmenite flotability indicated that the particle kinds and its distribution densities on the ilmenite surface are important factors influencing on its flotability. In practical work, the particle kinds on ilmenite surface can not be changed, but its distribution densities can be changed.Air-blowing agitation can influence the flotability of ilmenite, the more long the time of air-blowing agitation within limited range, the better the flotabiltity. Sulfuric acid is reacted with the cations on the surface of ilmenite, then the cations were solved, therefore the distribution densities of the particles were changed.At the same time, special absorption of SO42- and HSO-4 on ilmenite surface changed electric double layer on ilmenite-water interface and therefore activated the flotability of ilmenite.Based on the process mineralogy of the tailings after beneficiating iron in Panzhihua concentrator, the experimental research on flotation of ilmenite adoptingthe flowsheet composed of low-intensity magnetic separation (removal of iron) -high-intensity magnetic separation ( discarding tailings ) -flotation of sulfides-flotation of ilmenite and using SSB and oxalic acid as regulators, and F968 as collector, was performed.The experimental results indicated that quality ilmenite concentrate can be obtained with yield of 14.14%, grade of 48.22%TiO2 and recovery of 70.84%. The recovery of TiO2 increased by 50% by comparison with that of existent concentrator in Panzhihua which present recovery of TiO2 is about 20%, thus titanium resources can fully be utilized,the discharge of tailings can be decreased and the economic benefit can be increased. According to 6 million ton tailings discarded per year from Panzhihua iron concentrator, adopting the flowsheet and reagent regimes established in this research, 848.4 kiloton quality ilmenite concentrate can be recoveried per year from the tailings after beneficiating iron, about boo kiloton per year superior titanium concentrate can be recoveried more than present field concentrator, therefore discarded tailings pressure after beneficiating iron and storage capacity from tailings pond can also be decreased.
