Chemically Modified Carbon Paste Electrode (CMCPE) is one of the widely used chemically modified electrodes in electroanalytical methods due to the simplicity of preparation. As the other type of chemically modified electrodes used in electroanalytical chemistry, CMCPE posses various advantages, such as high selectivity, sensitivity, pre-concentration of analytes before the measurements. The key point of preparation of chemically modified electrode is to choose appropriate chemical modifier and the simplicity of the preparation. In this paper, chitosan used as chemical modifier and prepared carbon paste electrode with a simple method. The determination of toxic heavy metals, such as lead and cadmium were determined by stripping voltammetric methods. Improved sensitivity was observed with Chitosan modified CPCME both in cyclic voltammograms and stripping voltammograms due to the preconcentration of the metal ions. Experiment conditions were optimized with various experiments. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limit achieved to lxl0-8mol/L for lead and cadmium ions. Sodium aminosalicylate and ascorbic acid in the tablets were also determined with chitosan modified electrode. Also, improved sensitivity was observed as compared to the unmodified electrode. lxl0-7moI/L and lxl0-"6mol/L detection limits were achieved for sodium aminosalicylate and ascorbic acid. The methods are applicable to the simple and fast determination of toxic heavy metals and other alalytes in tablets.
