Red Mud is a waste material formed during the production of alumina.Considering the situation of alumina production and red mud utilization, itis necessary for us to develop production which has the high additionalvaluation. And in this article, red mud were treated by two methods. Using red mud as the main material, red mud was activated by theFeCl3 as an absorbent of Cr6+. The results show that activated red mud hashigher adsorptive ability of Cr6+ by 96.18%. The structure of red mud andraw material are studied by SEM, XRD, TG-DTA and FTIR. Because of theincreased Fe3+, the adsorption capability of activated red mud has greatlyimproved. The dosage of modifier, the dosage of sorbent, pH, temperatureand equation time has been optimized. And the mechanism of adsorptionalso has been discussed using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equation.Adsorption mode of activated red mud and raw material are cooperated byphysical adsorption and chemical adsorption. Mixing with fly ash and bentonite, red mud as the main material was III北京化工大学硕士学位论文sintered to a new-style ceramsite production. When 50~60% red mud ismixed with 20~30% fly ash, sintering temperature range is 1100~1125℃,firing time is less than 2 hours, red mud ceramsite particle's compressivestrength is higher than 8 MPa and rate of water absorption is higher than40%. Each of the two methods gave us a new choice to improve availabilitycoefficient of red mud.
