This thesis reviews the present research situation of rock mass discontinuities and rock mass evaluation, introduces the basic concept of fractal theory and the calculating method of fractal dimension. Basing on that, it discusses the fractal character of rock mass discontinuities, and the feasibility of taking the fractal dimension of rock mass discontinuity as the index of rock mass quality, aiming at the self-resembling character of rock mass discontinuities and combining a mine instance.In order to meet the need of studying the distribution character of rock masses, and to investigate discontinuities as detailedly as possible, this thesis puts forward the detailed measuring method of discontinuities basing on the former measuring methods. It writes a discontinuity network-simulating program, which is practical and whose operation is simple, using VBA in the AutoCAD environment, and applies the program to simulating a mine's rock mass discontinuities. On the base of these simulating drawings, applying Box-dimension method calculates the fractal dimension of discontinuity distribution, and testifies the fractal character of rock mass discontinuity distribution. According to the relationship of the fractal dimension and engineering rock mass grade, a rock mass quality classification is presented, which takes the fractal dimension of discontinuity distribution as the classifying index.The study of this thesis enriches and develops the fractal theory as well as offers a good tool for the quantitative analysis of rock mechanics issues.
