A series of bis(l-aryliminomethylenylnaphthalen-2-oxy)nickel complexes were synthesized and were fully characterized, and the complexes showed high catalytic activities for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO). The thesis includes three chapters as follows:Chapter 1. l-aryliminomethylenylnaphthalen-2-ol derivatives were prepared by means of condensation of 2-hydoxy-l-naphaldehyde with corresponding aniline and substituted 2-aminopridine in ethanol. Their structures were characterized Elemental Analyses, IR and NMR. Considering environmental friendship in the synthetic procedures, Microwave-assisted technique and grinding method were used to prepare one of them.Chapter 2. The synthesized l-aryliminomethylenylnaphthalen-2-ol derivatives reacted with nickel chloride to form bis(l-aryliminomethylenylnaphthalen-2-oxy)nickel complexes. All resultant compounds were structurally characterized by Elemental Analyses, IR and NMR, and the structures of the formed complexes were elucidated by X-ray crystal structure analysis.Chapter 3. The catalytic system showed high catalytic activities for the vinyl polymerization of Norbornene in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO). The catalytic activity variations had been followed by gas chromatography (GC) through monitoring the conversion of Norbornene. Catalytic activity, polymer yield and polymer molecular weight could be controlled by varying the reaction parameters. The obtained polymers are amorphous and soluble in halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons.
