The process of how to deal with problems of design is supposed to be high-context and absolutely complicated expression. The complex in industrial form design, lies in that the thinking process is unknown, and causes great troubles to acquire and represent design knowledge and design experience of designers. Therefore, it is the key to introducing A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) to industrial design that the mysterious "Black Box" reflecting designers' designing and thinking process is gradually revealed by researches through cognition-science sphere, and also powerful supports are provided to effectively acquire knowledge of designing process by automatically stimulating human's thinking through computers. And it is also a try we construct the ICAID system.This study mainly focuses on the realization of ICAID system and starts to probe into the design process and design objects in designing NC machine tools. By studying the thinking laws of designers in design process, this paper discusses the application process of GDT (General Design Theory) and PT (Prototype Theory) in aided design practice of NC machine tools in ICAID system. Furthermore, this study provides important theoretical support and practicing ways for the introduction of intelligence to ICAID system.By means of theoretical researches and experiments such as protocol analysis and image scale method, we reach the following conclusion: designers' creative design is closely associated with their past successful designing experience; visual image, as a medium, can offer effective and direct expression to externalize the knowledge of design process. Meanwhile, prototype can greatly inspire designers with creative inspiration, and help designers to search logical induction hidden behind their sensibility as a trigger starting up semantic knowledge in form design.Based on the above research, we developed the ICAID system composed by sketch-based aided design subsystem, image-scale-based aided design subsystem, and typical-case-based aided design subsystem. In the meantime, we constructed knowledge base to aid designers in learning on line. The whole research made a successful attempt for us to apply A.I. to the form design of NC machine tools.
