Increasing serious accidents together with social and legal pressure, occupational health and safety is more and more becoming the focus of the public. The critical situation requires more careful attention for occupational health and safety. Consequently it is of great necessity to popularize the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (called for short as OHSMS) in order to improve the present situation of our country's occupational health and safety condition. This paper describes the implementation and use of safety assessment approaches in safety management systems. During the writing, I looked up many relevant references about safety assessment , which come both from overseas and domestic. On this base, after studying and summarizing safety assessment and safety diagnoses approaches, then this paper made some new approaches which can be used in safety assessment and safety diagnoses. Safety assessment is very important in safety management.Chapter 2 of this paper mainly focused on conventional safety assessment approaches of sorts and how to use these approaches. The following chapters are focused on artificial neural network and ant colony algorithm, their theories, algorithm and how to apply them in safety assessment. Examples that show how to use these models are given. There are many approaches for safety assessment (or risk assessment), and they can be used in different situations .The approaches adopted in different industried or in different working conditions may share the similarities, but each has its own features. With the increase of people's awareness of risk and the development of the research on modern management, safety assessment is sure to be rapidly expanding in the future.
