Hydro viscous drive (HVD) which has developed since middle 1970s from abroad is a new fluid transmission. Its transmission principle is based on Newton friction law which uses the shearing of the oil film between two sets of friction disks to transmit torque. As a result, stepless speed change and synchronization between the input shaft and the output can be achieved, and it also can protect the transmission system when over loading .This paper is based on the study and development of HVD at home and abroad, and fully introduces and analyses the principle, structure and control speed performance of the hydro viscous variable speed drive in theory.According to the request of HVD, the pressure of the oil is changed by electro-hydro proportion valve, which can transfer the electric current's change to oil pressure's change proportionally. Math model and transfer function of the system are achieved. The transfer function figure of the HVD by electro-hydro proportion valve which can transfer the electric current's change to oil pressure's change is finished after analyzing the stability of rotating speed.This paper using Matlab to emulate and analyses system stability by the emulate figure. In the end, analyses the application of the HVD in colliery transmission equipment and compares the HVD and other speed control devices from technical and economic aspects. The above shows that hydro viscous soft start system has an advantage in colliery transmission equipment in big load, hard to start, high speed and long distance. HVD has large economic and social benefit, so it has a promising future in market and application.
