Taking the remote sensing images as the major data source, this paper makes a comprehensive study on the ecological environment of Guangzhou City based on the Geographical Information System technology. Aiming at the major influencing factors of regional environment and the data availability at present, a synthetical assessment model of ecological environment is established. Then four items (land cover, soil erosion, topography-geomorphology and meteorological conditions) and nine indexes (land use types, vegetation coverage etc.) are selecting to assess the regional environment and its spatial patterns. Further analysis are made by integrating social and economic data, in order to find out the causes and the corresponding countermeasures for the current situation of regional ecological environment. This supplies the division support for regional economic development and environment protection.RS (remote sensing technology) and GIS (Geographical Information System technology) are both effective means for studies on resources and environment. There are many advantages of using RS and GIS technology in different scales ecological environment evaluation. Easily data extraction, abundant information and quick analysis are its main characteristics, and that can be an improvement of the traditional method in obtaining ecological environment data.This paper makes a comprehensive ecological environment assessment on Guangzhou City by using the RS and GIS technology based on the grid data. The thinking of the design is clear; the analysis is simple and concise. All the evaluation results save the spatial characteristics of every data information so that they have good visibility. Meanwhile, overlaying the administrative boundary and the evaluationresults to analysis the district distribution of ecological environment quality can reflect its social characteristics, and that can make the results be more effective and more applied.Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province; it's the center of commerce, finance, transportation and information in south China; and it's also one of the most vigorous supper cities in China. With the increasing exploitation activities, regional ecological environment is faced with more compressive stresses. So there is much significance in speeding up the sustainable development of society and economy and the protection of ecology by establishing a scientific evaluation system and making a comprehensive assessment on the ecological environment.The results show that the index of assessment for Guangzhou City is symmetry. The values are between 2.79~9.85 and the average is 7.22. The area in which the index is over 7 is more than 62 percent of the total area. The environmental quality of southeast is better than northwest. And if the administrative distribution is concerned, the favorable sequence of average environment index of each district is Zhengcheng, Panyu, Guangzhou city proper, Conghua and Huadu. The environment quality of Huadu is the worst of all; and more attentions should be put on it in the process of regional development.
