This paper takes the west part of Hunan province in which the ecological environment is fragile as a researching area by remote sensing and Geographical Information System technology,and a synthetical assessment model of the ecological environment is established by aiming at the region's major ecological problems,and study on the spatial pattern of the quality for this region.It puts forward the corresponding countermeasures by analysising on interating social and economic data according to the different environmental areas. That supplies the division support for speeding up the sustainable development of society and economy and the protection of ecological environment.This paper takes the remote sensing image as the major data sources . The remote sensing technology has many advantages, being quick, macroscopic and being hardly disturbed by human being.It enhances the scientific quality and availability of the assessment by the remote sensing technology being used to supply the reliable and latest data for the ecological environment.This paper makes a regional ecological environment assessment by a digital environmental model using a grid data. The thinking of the design is clear .The analysis is simple and consise. It is much better to the secondary-scale regional ecological environment assessment. Meanwhile, it studies the vertical distribution regularity of the ecological environment quality through overlaying the results of assessment and Digital Elevation Model, finding out the mountainous ecological environment assessmentmethod .The ecological environment of the west part of hunan province is sensitive and fragile . The ecological environment meets a increasing pressure as Chinese western development deepen further. Especially in the inland mountainous area , the usage and development of it will increase day and day because of the peoples's urgent desire of get rid of the poverty .This paper regards the whole area as, a study object. It focuses on the area's environment characteristics , integrates the situations and requirements of the social and economic development selects natural background index and human being activities effect index which have an apparent influence to the ecological environment. It make a comprehensive analytical assessment to the regional ecological environment quality .Based on this , it makes a spatial diversified pattern analysis.The results of assessment show that the index of assessment for this area is symmetry, in which the area of the second, third and fourth grade region are 85 percent of the grass area. The environmental quality of southeast is better than northwest,and the valley's is better than hilly area.The study show that the ecological environment assessment for a region using remote sensing data and Geographical Information System technology has these advantages of fast and objective. The assessment and mapping are automation, and the resultsof the assessment is exact.
