This paper is an attempt to develop linearity-error measuring theory and practice through analyzing the on -line measurement for linearity error of contouring prime line during the roller-processing in metallurgical enterprises. The measure of error is the comparison for the actual measure to prefect one. In actual measure, prefect element can't be realized. It is replaced by measurable benchmark. The benchmark contains the error. How to separate the error is a question for discussionThe error separation technique is applied to the on-line measurement with the comparison and research of a variety of linearity error measurements. The paper is designed to systematically derive the mathematical models of "Time-Domain-Three-Point" of linearity error measurements, through analyzing multipoint error separation technique, and with the result of computer-emulation we confirm the theory .The systematical error analysis is given to the measurement error caused by the on-line measurement when Time-Domain-Multipoint error separation technique is applied to contouring prime line linearity error of revolving work pieces, and therefore the basic method is given to a further approach to higher measurement accuracy. In the paper, the method to evaluate linearity error is discussed, the equivalent mathematical models are established, and computer-software design is carried out.Through theoretical approaches, we design and develop the measurement system for linearity error of rollers' contouring prime lines, improve a traditional micrometer with a single measuring point, and make three measuring points share one micrometer and thus controlled by computers. But when Time-Domain-Technique is adopted, the strict starting conditions for measurement should be needed, i.e. three measuring points should be collinear.
