The partial oxidation of methane (POM) to syngas was carried out in a continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor. The effects of reaction conditions, different additives and load on the catalytic activity of monolithic Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst were investigated. And the catalyst samples were characterized by means of BET, TPR, TPD and XRD techniques. The results demonstrated that optimal CH4 conversion was obtained as Ni content was 8~12 wt %. The CH4 decomposition experimental showed that monolithic Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst has good ability to activate methane. The activity of the Ni /γ-Al2O3 catalyst increased with increasing temperature; CH4 conversion decreased with increasing CH4/ O2 ratio; when GHSV was 105h-1, the monolithic catalyst showed the best activity. The addition of NaO, SrO, La2O3 and CeO2 caused an increase in catalytic activity over the monolithic Ni /γ-Al2O3 catalyst, La2O3 was the best among them. The addition of 2wt% La2O3 could improve the reducibility of the catalyst, change the absorption of H2 and CO on the catalyst and suppress the growth in crystal size. The activities of the catalysts supported over the Al-Zr-Ce mixed oxides changed with the composition of the supports, activity test showed that the best catalytic performance was obtained when Al2O3: ZrO2: CeO2=95:2.5:2.5.
