The outburst of coal and gas is a sort of accidents that occasionally happens in underground coal-mining. It has been hard to alarm the accident in advance mainly because the origin for the accident largely remains unclear. Fortunately, new geochemical mechanism related to hydrogen release from coal has been recently proposed and partly verified to be responsible for the accident. Thus, developing new technique for detecting hydrogen in high efficiency and economy is greatly necessary in present.In this work, quantitative analysis of hydrogen (H2) and helium (He) was developed with normal gas chromatography for further knowledge of gaseous species in the gas that is naturally formed and released from underground coal. Methodologically, collecting, packaging and sampling gas specimens were also investigated in detail. Various conditions for determination of helium and hydrogen by using gas chromatography are reported in this paper, and a method for simultaneous gas chromatographic analysis of helium and hydrogen is established. In addition, the developed analysis in gas chromatograph was successfully employed to measure hydrogen and helium in 10-6 level for huge amount of gas specimens collected from different coal seams in mining area of Jiao-zuo and exploring area of Ban-ji of Huai-nan.The gas chromatography may be in the high efficiency, economy and exact examination for hydrogen and helium in coal bed gas, which fits to the field spreading. Utilizing the closed glass vase of saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution is the practical container to keep in hydrogen and the helium gas.After systematic sampling and analysis, the result is confirmed that hydrogen and helium in the gas of coal bed universally are against methane in concentration. Relationship between hydrogen and the helium has specified regular pattern.The results through this work are expected to be valuable for further developing new technique to alarm the outburst of coal and gas in field. The work settled the test means base for design a gas chromatography for analysis of helium, hydrogen and methane simultaneous.
