Lanthanides have special properties of optics, electronics and magnetics due to their 4f electrons. Organic–inorganic lanthanide hybrid materials which are synthesized through introducing organic components on molecular scale or nanoscale, respectively, may lead to novel properties. In this dissertation, valuable explorations have been carried out on the new synthetic strategies (mainly solution-based routes) for low dimensional organic–inorganic lanthanide hybrid materials on molecular scale and nanoscale, as well as their formation mechanism and the novel physical/chemical properties. A series of lanthanide carboxylates were synthesized. Among them a series of lanthanide nitrilotriacetates have been prepared through hydrothermal synthesis. Their structure, fluorescence emission spectra and thermal stability were investigated as well as the 3 – dimensional and 2 - dimensional double-layer structures of Ln - NTA compounds were determined. The organic components were later extended to meta-nitrobenzoic acid. A series binuclear compounds of lanthanide nitrobenzoates were synthesized through hydrothermal synthesis. The result of single crystal XRD showed that the binuclear compounds were connected to be 1 – dimensional chain. On the study of low – dimensional organic – inorganic nanomaterials, organic compenont was introduced on the nanoscale. A new hydrothermal strategy of lanthanide hydroxide nanowire/naontube with double bond function was developed since there are excessive hydroxy groups on the surface of the fresh lanthanide hydroxide. A novel MMA-Y(OH)3 composite core-shell nanotubes have been successfully prepared through a single-step in-situ hydrothermal method. Their structure, fluorescence emission spectra and thermal stability as well as their formation mechanism are studied.
