PTT (a shortened form for polytrimethylene terephthalate) is now one of the new fibers which attract most widely attention around the world. Although PTT belongs to the polyester family as PET, it integrates almost all the fine properties of other synthetic fibers: as chemical-resistant as PET, as soft and elastic as PA, and as bulky as acrylic. This fiber has now been used in many fields such as carpet, non-woven fabric and plastic for engineering.There are mainly two forms regarding the usage of PTT: PTT filament yarn and PTT staple. Currently, much research has been done on PTT filament yarn, with the main focus on the fatigue resistance. And a series of swim wears, body suits and other clothes have been developed. The focus of this paper is on the we ring properties of PTTstaple.To get a preliminary knowledge of PTT staple, relevant experiments were done to make a comparison of mechanical property, both tensile property and rebound elasticity, between PTT and PET. In addition, experiments were also carried out to find out how dyeing process effects PTT's mechanical property.Regarding product development, some usual fibers, including cotton, viscose, bamboo, wool and acrylic, are chosen to spin into yarn with PTT in appropriate proportion.With these spun yarns, some research was done. Firstly, the yarns were tested on USTER to get several important parameters with which we would determine the quality of the yarns. Then, on the basis of test results and PTT' characteristics, we put forward some constructive advise on how to improve the quality of PTT spun yarn. Also, tests were taken on yarns' tensile property. Based on the results, it turned out that the extensibility and rebound elasticity of PTT blended spun yarn were mainly determined by the proportion of PTT staple in the yarn. Therefore, advice for reference on how to decide the proportion of PTT staple was given according to the usage of the yarn.Next, fabrics with these yarns were developed on flat knitting machine. Then the fabrics were worked by the pre-process, dyeing and heat-set techniques, which show the general technical lines and ways of PTT knitted fabrics.After finishing, investigations were made mainly on three aspects: the rebound elasticity as well as soft and bulky hand.Through experiments of repeated stretch under different elongation, the excellent rebound elasticity of PTT blended fabrics were proved owing to the addition of PTT staple. Meanwhile some main factors which had great impacts on fabric rebound elasticity were analyzed and several pieces of advice on the improvement of rebound elasticity for PTT blended fabric.Soft and bulky hand is one of the most important properties of PTT. By comparing soft and bulky hand of particular fabrics, it turned out that soft and bulky hand were greatly improved due to the addition of PTT spun yarn. Therefore, the amount of wool could be reduced by adding PTT, decreasing the production cost significantly.Finally, by using fuzzy comprehensive evaluation with the establishment of mathematical modal, a comprehensive evaluation of fabrics was given which proved that the additionof PTT spun yarn did improve fabric hand.In conclusion, the value proposition of PTT spun yarn in textile apparel applications were described by test and analysis of the properties of fiber, blended spun yarn and fabric.
