This thesis consists of three chapters In the first chapter, the type, effect and development of flame retardants on treatment of wool were reviewed, as well as the resent studies on the thermal degradation of wool treated flame-retardants. The purpose, significance and result in this paper were also summarized. 64 references were cited. In the second chapter, wool were treated by ZrO2 , TiO2 , Al2O3 sol-gel system. The flame retardant and thermal degradation of wool treated with metal oxide sol-gel system were studied in air by thermal analysis, IR, SEM, limiting oxygen index (LOI) and char yield. Experimental data showed that for the wool treated with metal oxide sol-gel system, there were (a) lows in thermal degradation onset temperature, (b) increases in limiting oxygen index, (c) decreases in char yield, and (d) improves in flame retardant. In the third chapter, wool were treated by SnO2, MnO2, ZnO sol-gel system. The samples treated by metal oxide sol-gel system were studied in air by thermal analysis, SEM, limiting oxygen index (LOI) and char yield. Compared with pure wool , in the treated wool there is increases in limiting oxygen index, increases in char yield, and improves in flame retardant.
